It is quite possible to attempt the immigration process yourself without the use of an immigration consultant. Your application should be checked multiple times to ensure that it is correct at the time of submission to avoid a negative decision. Here are some tips on to avoid these common Express Entry mistakes.
1 - Delay in submitting the application
You have exactly 60 days from when you receive the Invitation to Apply (ITA) to submit a complete application. The online portal is often down for maintenance so we recommend that you do not wait until the last day to submit. Missing your deadline means you have reenter the Express Entry pool and hopefully receive another ITA before you can apply for permanent residency again.
2. Incorrect information in your profile
It's crucial that the information in your Express Entry is correct as your points and eligibility criteria depends on it. Incorrectly listing your foreign work experience as Canadian work experience will give you extra points which you didn't earn. Listing the incorrect NOC code could be detrimental as well. Changing one digit on your NOC code could mean that you incorrectly listed a TEER category 3 code instead of a TEER category 4. The latter is not eligible for Express Entry. A simple finger error, but with disastrous outcome.
3. Misrepresentation
Read those "yes" & "no" questions VERY carefully. If you're not sure about an answer, reach out to an immigration consultant who can clarify what your answer should be. You need to as honest as possible about your career history, medical issues and criminal history if applicable. Misrepresentation results in a five year bar from applying for any visa to Canada.
4. Documentation not included
This is quite common and most applications are rejected as incomplete as not all documentation was included with the application. If you claimed points for something or need to prove eligibility be sure to include proof!
These are only a few mistakes that people make when submitting their Express Entry permanent residency applications.
